Since the movie is shot on film, Stiller exploits the camerawork to tell the viewer the scene is a daydream. Though as viewers, we are easily able to discern whether a scene is real or fake in Walter’s life. We see Walter’s struggles with daydreaming frequently at the beginning of the film, where he can barely distinguish his imagination from reality, often leaving him disappointed with what his life could have been.
The diagnosis is classified as excessive daydreaming, so much so that it interferes with an individual’s daily life. The story is driven by Walter’s frequent vivid, action-packed, and unrealistic daydreams, which result from his condition called “maladaptive daydreaming”. Ben Stiller’s directing history is not known for holding much substance more than a fun comedy movie, but The Secret Life of Walter Mitty changes Stiller’s trajectory as a director.įirst, the movie is shot on film (which I always love and believe is often superior to digital), utilizing an RRICAM Lite (LT) Camera and Hawk V-Lite Lenses, which are phenomenal at capturing natural light, giving the film an authentic and natural feel. Nonetheless, this film is far from dull or a 52/100. They’re watching a film describing themselves, and saying “It’s so boring!!!” Critics don’t like that the film is telling them the truth, and not distracting them from reality. Change comes from you, and you being yourself. They don’t realize what the movie is aiming to tell them you don’t need to search for an external influence to change your life.
Like the main character Walter Mitty (shown below) in the film, they are searching for something outside of their lives to excite and inspire them to have a more eventful life. Ironically, this relates to one of the primary points that The Secret Life of Walter Mitty conveys. Most reviews surrounding the film upon its release said it “lacked substance” and was “bland”. Its Rotten Tomatoes score of 52% is blasphemous, but then again, the company’s scale is nowhere near the best for movie ratings. One of the best comfort, feel-good movies around, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is possibly one of the most underrated films I’ve seen.
